A conference on the 180th birthday of Bertha von Suttner
Russia's war against Ukraine has already lasted more than a year and a half; Every day people suffer and die on both sides as a result of brutal armed violence. The Nobel Peace Prize winner, humanist and writer Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914) made a big impact with her anti-war novel "The Arms Down!" Already at the end of the 19th century, millions of readers around the world were made aware of the horror and atrocities of war.
The book marked the beginning of her extensive work against militarism, nationalism, anti-Semitism and the alliance between the military and the church. From a historical perspective, we want to understand how she managed to build an international, pacifist and feminist network before the First World War.
With a view to the current war against Ukraine, we discuss the relevance of Suttner's peace ideas and social utopias today. How should one defend oneself against aggressors like Russia with pacifism? How can an end to killing and destruction be achieved? Put down your weapons or deliver your weapons?
After an aperitif, the event comes to a close with the rare opportunity to watch an early film adaptation of Bertha von Suttner's famous novel "The Weapons Down!" from 1914 with live musical accompaniment by the duo VeronikaOtto & AishaOtto.
