Most people know cyanotype as a “sun print”: a sheet of paper leaves behind a light silhouette. But once you know how to control the exposure, a much more expressive technique opens up. By working with grayscale, a single print can contain up to seven different tonal values—making cyanotype a wonderful method for reproducing your own artwork. Even when using digital source images, the result has a warm, nostalgic, and unmistakably handmade look.

Who is this workshop for?
All skill levels. No prior digital experience is required: the hand-drawn method requires absolutely no technology.
How does it work?
In this workshop, you’ll coat your own paper with the cyanotype solution, prepare an illustration or design, expose it to UV light, and rinse it to reveal the finished image. At the end, you’ll take your own finished pieces home with you.
How are the prints created?
- By hand: by drawing on tracing paper with colored pencils or crayons, or by layering semi-transparent paper.
- Digitally: by preparing a grayscale file (in Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate), which we’ll print onto tracing paper on-site.
What will you learn?
- How cyanotype works: its strengths and limitations
- How to choose the right paper, apply the solution evenly, and control the result
- How to prepare a hand-drawn negative on tracing paper
- How to prepare a digital file: the correct grayscale levels, setting up the file, and converting a photo into a cyanotype negative
- Exposure under UV lamps, rinsing, and drying
What should you bring?
- Simple sketches or image ideas, in one color (monochrome) and with up to seven tonal values
- If you’d like to work digitally: your own laptop or iPad
What will be provided?
- All materials are provided: solutions, paper, tracing paper, drawing supplies, brushes, and UV lamps.
- You’ll take your finished prints home with you.
- Ready-to-use cyanotype kits will also be available for purchase on the day of the event.

Accessibility
The workshop room is located on the ground floor and is accessible via a 15-centimeter-high step. Unfortunately, the restroom is not wheelchair-accessible due to a partition between the toilet and the sink.
