PRENZLAUERBERGINALE#10

The film festival opens with *DAS VERSTECK*. Max (Manfred Krug) tries to win back his ex-wife Wanda (Jutta Hoffmann) with a trick. Of course, it doesn’t really work out, but it’s still a delight. It was filmed at the “Ecke Schönhauser” and the surrounding area; Jutta Hoffmann will be our guest. The supporting film, on the other hand, is pure agitation: tenants in arrears were already frowned upon as early as 1971.

On the third evening, GLÜCK IM HINTERHAUS will be shown, another DEFA classic. Husband Karl (Dieter Mann) falls in love with the young library intern (Ute Lubosch), leaves his wife (Jutta Wachowiak) for her, and moves in with her in the rear building on Oderberger Straße. Jutta Wachowiak and Ute Lubosch will be our guests that evening.

Other highlights:

The A57 bus used to pass by the Filmtheater am Friedrichshain; this short film offers a tongue-in-cheek look at the daily life of the driver and his conductor, Otto, in 1966.

*KOMM IN DEN GARTEN* features three bon vivants in the post-reunification era, fully immersed in the process of transformation. At first, however, they are sitting in the former death strip having a picnic, while in the background an excavator knocks over a border guard watchtower.

The supporting film, on the other hand, dates from the pre-reunification era and was edited together from various episodes of *MODEKISTE*, a fashion magazine program on East German television. Shoulder pad alert at the planetarium, on the water tower, and at the Dimitroffstraße subway station!

Since the ten-year span is supposed to be a bit longer after all, an additional evening is offered—and dancing is allowed: featuring a graduate of the state ballet school in Prenzlauer Berg under exam stress, a rock ’n’ roll couple on New Year’s Eve—also under stress—and a married couple of dance instructors battling against rock music.

Probably in vain!
