Fifty years ago, on 12 December 1976, Ulay ‘stole’ Carl Spitzweg’s *The Poor Poet* (1839) from the Neue Nationalgalerie and took the painting to the home of a Turkish so-called ‘guest worker family’ in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Half a century later, the Neue Nationalgalerie revisits this boundary-crossing intervention with the exhibition ‘Ulay, Ulay & Abramović’, returning Ulay’s work to the very place where one of his most significant actions took place.
