NUTCRACKER by the Berlin Ballet Company

At the Babylon, a movie theater from the 1920s, a film begins: a Christmas Eve, a girl named Marie, a nutcracker with a secret.

But then midnight strikes in the film—and the dancers step out of the screen—live—right into the middle of the auditorium, right past your seat. Pointe shoes, the battle with the Mouse King, a grand pas de deux—ballet that belongs on the grand opera stages, suddenly so close that you can feel the air moving. The entire auditorium is transformed into Marie’s dream—and you’re sitting right in the middle of it. Hoffmann’s story is told in its entirety: a nut too hard to crack, and the answer to how the Nutcracker became the Nutcracker

in the first place.

Tchaikovsky’s music carries the evening. And the entire night comes alive in 1920s Berlin—the film, the costumes, even the auditorium where you’re sitting—itself long since part of the set design.
