Conversation with Lorenz Hemicker, grandson of SS officer Ernst Hemicker, and Natascha Höhn

In the Rumbula forest near Riga, around 26,500 Latvian Jews from the Riga ghetto and 1,053 Jews who had been deported to Riga from Berlin were murdered within two days in November/December 1941.

The engineer and SS officer Ernst Hemicker (1896-1973), head of the construction department at the Higher SS and Police Leader for Eastern Germany and Northern Russia, was involved in the murder operation. He organized the planning and digging of mass graves in the Rumbula forest. On November 30, 1941, he also temporarily supervised the first of the two mass shootings.
