France/Switzerland 2004, directed by Christophe Barratier
At a boarding school for difficult boys, the unemployed musician Clément Mathieu sets up a choir against the headmaster’s wishes. Unlike the authoritarian headmaster, who had relied on punishment, he uses music to draw the pupils out of their shell and away from their aggressive behaviour.
A moving drama that avoids moralising and lets the songs speak for themselves; their lyrical metaphors evoke distant lands, spring and freedom, transporting both singers and listeners to an imaginary, happier world.
