Following a hiatus from 2005 to 2010, Mike, driven by an insatiable hunger to perform and create music, decided to revive the band. He put together a completely new line-up consisting of Andrew Roachford, Tim Howar, Luke Juby, Anthony Drennan and Gary Wallis, who have largely formed the heart and soul of the Mechanics ever since.
The creative chemistry clicked almost as soon as they started playing together, and in 2011 they released “The Road” and went on tour for the first time. They have now played an incredible 374 concerts together and released three albums, two of which made it into the UK Top 10.
Since Nic Collins joined the band on drums in 2023 for the ‘Refuelled! Tour’ (in honour of Gary Wallis), they have continued to deliver phenomenal performances tour after tour. *The Telegraph* awarded their most recent performance at the Royal Albert Hall 4 out of 5 stars, writing that they had “… brought the house down” and “… caught the audience’s imagination magnificently”, whilst the *Northern Echo* simply described their Newcastle gig as an “exemplary performance”.
Mike Rutherford says: “When we started talking about this tour, it dawned on me that the core of this line-up is the one that’s been with The Mechanics the longest! The fact that we’re going on tour again is absolute proof of Roach, Tim, Luke and Anthony’s talent – they’re wonderful musicians and wonderful people, and the way Nic has slotted into the band has not only significantly lowered the average age of the band but also brings a whole new energy that really rounds it all off! I can’t wait to do this again – to be honest, I don’t think we’d be doing it if it weren’t for these lads; 17 years have flown by! We’re looking forward to seeing you all soon.”
