There are books you read. And there are books you experience. Max Goldt’s new work, *Aber?*, belongs to the second category—a literary comeback after more than a decade that feels like a reunion with an old friend: charming, sharp-tongued, a bit eccentric—and, as always, brilliant.

“He really has beautiful handwriting. That signature is a real little work of art.”

“Of course he does. His writing is a real little work of art, too!”

“But look at how he holds that pen! So crooked!”

“But he has a beautiful writing case! It’s even made of real leather.”

“The pen is really nice, too! That guy is a true pro!”

“My mom used to have a pen just as nice as that one, but she went to Thailand and never found it again. Probably stolen! The hotel staff are paid so poorly!”

Max Goldt, born in 1958, grew up in Göttingen. A musician in his early years—notably as a member of the band Foyers des Arts—he has been writing for more than 35 years. His keenly observed columns used to appear regularly in the satirical magazine *Titanic* and have been repeatedly compiled into book form. By conventional standards, his pieces are all short, and almost all of them are funny, humorous, or satirical.

“Max Goldt is the epitome of humanity.” (Durs Grünbein)
