a musical lecture by Dr. Dietmar Hiller (Konzerthaus Berlin)
For many music-loving people, Christmas is only really Christmas if they have not heard the opening chorus of Bach's Christmas oratorio "Jauchzet, frohlocket" at least once during Advent or directly on the holidays.
Between the first Advent and the Christmas holidays, this masterpiece of Christmas music, which is probably the most frequently performed in German churches and concert halls, is heard what feels like an infinite number of times every year.
Why countless choirs and choral ensembles perform this oratorio masterpiece again every year, either in excerpts or in full (that means six cantatas lasting almost half an hour in a row), and why it is so enormously popular with (pre-)Christmas audiences, is explained by Dr. Dietmar Hiller in his musical lecture as part of the "Marzahn Concert Talks".
This will certainly also clarify which recordings of the oratorio are the most worthwhile from the speaker's point of view.
Dietmar Hiller is a musicologist and worked as a dramaturge at the Konzerthaus Berlin from 1984 to 2024. In this role, he explained the world of classical music to music enthusiasts with his lectures and concert introductions. He also works as an organist and church musician and is involved on a voluntary basis in the Berlin choir scene.
