ghostbox – caja fantasma is a sound-lecture performance about ghosts, siblinghood and lost futures. The director and performer María F. Giacaman Hasbún, together with her brother, the sound artist Juan Lázaro, invites the audience to an intimate listening session.

Drawing on their own family history, they recount Latin American horror stories and explore the uncanny from psychoanalytic and Marxist perspectives.

Through live sound and storytelling, an acoustic séance emerges in which live voices, analogue synthesisers and archive recordings merge into a gentle haunting. The lecture-performance thus becomes an active practice of remembrance and mourning: repressed and forgotten stories become audible once more, and ghosts transform into figures that can be experienced both physically and aurally.

In doing so, the siblings explore the uncanny from psychoanalytic and Marxist perspectives. A spectre is that which refuses to accept a given reality; the notion that our present is haunted by a future that was promised to us but never materialised. In a culture that seems stuck in a cycle of repetition, and in which alternative forms of coexistence are becoming increasingly difficult to imagine, ghosts emerge as memories of lost futures. What if, hidden behind these ghosts, lies what is still possible?
