To the 140th birthday of Erwin Barth

Nuns, soldiers and privateers. A garden monument and almost a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unknown to many: the park is part of the original planning of the then independent city of Charlottenburg for this area. If these plans had been carried out, Siemensstadt would certainly not exist and Charlottenburg-North would also look completely different.
But things turned out differently.

An exciting story developed.

According to the plans of the horticultural director Erwin Barth the construction began, after many difficulties, in October 1920. Only with the establishment of the foundation "Park, Play and Sport" in 1921, sponsorship money could be raised for the continuation.

On May 27th, 1923, the "Volkspark Jungfernheide" (Peoples' Park Jungfernheide) was officially opened in the district during the "Games and Sport Weeks". Initially a section with a swimming pool.
The full extension was completed in 1927.

The park, as Erwin Barth had built it, only existed for a few years.

The lido, the high ropes course, the new day-care centre and perhaps soon the garden theatre again. Erwin Barth, a representative of the people's park movement, would certainly have liked these offers:

From the very beginning, he wanted people to stroll around the Jungfernheide in a wild, rather than a civilized manner.
