Reading and discussion with Carolin Leder, Tugay Saraç, and Berfin Celebi

Sexual and gender diversity is still a major taboo in many Muslim communities. Believers insist on the incompatibility between religious and sexual and/or gender identity, in line with their conservative interpretation of the Koran.

This situation has given rise to a manifold need for support and pastoral or legal counselling, which the Islam & Diversity (AID) contact point has been providing since March 2020.

The anthology Liebe ist halal (Love is Halal) aims to create a foundation for the queer Muslim community. The liberal orientation of the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque uniquely combines the Muslim perspective with the urgent need to criticise structures that promote queer hostility in Islamic communities – while at the same time laying a scientifically sound foundation for a queer Muslim movement.

Tugay Saraç was born in Berlin in 1997 as the third-generation child of a so-called guest worker family. Due to his own homosexuality, which he rejected, he became increasingly radicalized. Today, he heads the Islam and Diversity Contact Point, which advocates for the concerns of queer Muslims and ex-Muslims.

Berfin Celebi, formerly known as "Kurdische Kween," is a German-Kurdish transgender woman who has become known for her social media presence and her commitment to the LGBTQI+ community. She became known as a drag queen but has since begun her gender reassignment transition. She also works as an actress, activist, and podcaster ("Tuntentalk").

A collaboration with the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque.
