Lignin Futures

At the opening of the accompanying exhibition “Lignin Futures” by the Weißensee Academy of Art, which runs from 11 November to 23 November 2026 at the Futurium Lab, scientists and designers will provide insights into the latest work from the interdisciplinary research project LignoLight, which is developing innovative materials and products based on lignin, a by-product of cellulose and bioethanol production.

At the opening, you’ll find out which materials have been developed for the fashion and furniture industries, how these can be turned into products, and why on earth everything has turned brown.

Shoe lovers won’t be disappointed either: models from the lignin-based limited edition by the Berlin-based shoe manufacturer Trippen will be available to try on at the opening. You can find out directly from the researchers present at the event what further potential lignin holds, for example in relation to climate change, and why lignin has remained largely unknown until now.

As an interdisciplinary research project, LignoLight is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

-> On Thursday 12 November 2026, an Open Lab evening organised by the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin will take place at the Futurium Lab from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

-> Following a brief welcome and introductory remarks by Steven Eschig from the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition featuring all project participants, research institutions and partner companies.
