19th Open Studios Steglitz-Zehlendorf

Over two weekends, 45 artists invite you to the 19th Steglitz-Zehlendorf Open Studios. On 7 and 8 November, 20 artists will open their doors at 17 venues in Dahlem, Lichterfelde, Steglitz and Lankwitz; on 14 and 15 November, 25 artists will follow suit at 15 venues in Wannsee, Schlachtensee, Nikolassee and Zehlendorf.

The artistic diversity ranges from painting and photography to sculptures and installations. The studios become living spaces where art is created: visitors discover works, materials and workspaces, meet the artists in person and learn what moves them and drives their artistic practice.

Art needs space. Affordable studios are in short supply: despite progress in the rescue process, the K19 Studios Berlin remain under threat, whilst Diether Münchgesang’s studio is at risk of demolition. The Open Studios raise the profile of these workspaces and strengthen the local art scene. New participants this year include Maks Dannecker, Kunstwerk90 and Laura Luzia, who is exhibiting in Anja Beecken’s studio. Long-standing participants contribute their experience and help shape the community.

Behind the Open Studios lies a self-organised initiative by artists who live and work in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. The series of events is organised collectively and funded from the participants’ own resources. The aim is to give the growing local art scene greater visibility, to promote exchange and to make artistic practices from the borough accessible to a wider public. Particularly at a time when cultural venues and artistic voices require special attention, the initiative makes an important contribution to the visibility and networking of the local art scene.

The Gallery of Things will open on 14 November exclusively for the opening from 6 pm to 9 pm, and as usual on 15 November.
