Between French nobility and virtuoso Italian flair
At the beginning of the 18th century, Paris was a highly developed musical centre, where the city’s own musical traditions of the Grand Siècle, the sonata form and virtuoso playing techniques from Italy, and a new appreciation for rational simplicity came together in a way that was both fruitful and fraught with conflict.
