Directed by François Truffaut, France 1980
Paris, 1942. The Jewish director Steiner (Heinz Bennent) is hiding from the Nazis in the cellar of his theatre. Only his wife Marion (Catherine Deneuve) knows where he is hiding. Every evening she goes down to the cellar and tells him about the rehearsals and life upstairs.

The longer Steiner has to remain in hiding, the more he loses touch with reality – and soon loses Marion too, who falls in love with Bernard (Gérard Depardieu).
A brilliant interplay between theatre and reality, staged with irony and subtlety.
