A L’ARME! Festival Vol. X+I

Over three days, the festival presents an interdisciplinary variety of protagonists of a new beginning that is not only about music, but also about art and performance.

The bridge from improvisation to noise to hip-hop is an integral part of the “Vol. X+I". The first Berlin concert by Kassa Overall, celebrated as “one of the boldest futurists of modern jazz” (Pitchfork), is an example of this. On stage with him is Tomoki Sanders, among others, with a saxophone that they inherited from their father, Pharoah Sanders. Lukas Koenig, initiator of 1 Above Minus Underground, is just as at home in jazz as he is in hip-hop. Joining his band are noise luminaries Elvin Brandhi and Victoria Shen, and tireless rap innovator Dälek.

Another highlight is the premiere of Joy Guidry presents Radical Acceptance. Guidry can hardly be located between new music, soundscapes and free jazz - black, queer and radical, Guidry breaks with stereotypes and expectations. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the album "Radical Acceptance" is "one of the strongest statements that free music has made in recent times".

These latest developments are also linked to historical breakthroughs in “A L'ARME!”. A red thread leads from the atonality of Carl Michael von Hauswolff to Thomas Ankersmit's homage to the Serge modular synthesizer to the hyper-pop opera of No Plexus, which breaks down the clichés about Generation Y. Lots of strong statements that can stand for themselves, but appear even more productive in a polyphonic dialogue on "A L'ARME!". "Vol. X+I” remains true to the subversive impetus of “A L'ARME!”: tease, inspire and open the eyes and ears of the audience.
