Based on Heinrich von Kleist’s “The Broken Jug”

With a playful spirit, Bridge Markland races through Kleist’s *The Broken Jug* and distils the classic into an entertaining pop-music courtroom show.

The legal dispute over a broken jug, being heard in court, conceals another offence: an influential man has harassed a young woman. Will Eve dare to accuse the perpetrator and thereby exonerate her fiancé, Ruprecht? For he faces the prospect of military service in distant lands, whilst Hans Albers sings evocatively: ‘Near Rocktown he has long since lain in his grave / and flowers grow out of his bones’. The web of lies and the abuse of power become increasingly transparent as the show progresses. Will justice prevail in the end?

In rapid succession, the master of transformation plays – with and without hand-operated puppets – the village judge Adam, the clerk Licht, the court councillor Walter, the plaintiff Marthe Rull, her daughter Eve Rull and her fiancé Ruprecht, as well as the witness Mrs Brigitte.

The Berlin-based performer Bridge Markland is a virtuoso of role-play and transformation. An artist who effortlessly transcends all boundaries between dance, theatre, performance art, cabaret and puppet theatre.
