*Gym Bros* tells the stories of Stan and Sven, two teenagers who devote themselves to bodybuilding – only for it to turn into a living hell. Instead of winning over a girlfriend with their muscles, they lose her; instead of optimising their bodies, they ruin them; and they fall into the clutches of misogynistic ideologues.

In this open and physically intense play, full of shifts in perspective, the audience shares in the fascination and promises of training as well as its missteps. The aim is not to discredit sport, but simply to highlight the point at which training and an obsession with the body have negative or even destructive effects, and to show how this happens. As well as bodybuilding, other forms of body optimisation (Looksmaxxing, Bonesmashing) are also addressed.

The staging avoids shocking visual projections – of which there are plenty on the internet – and instead draws entirely on the playful resources of theatre.

There’s no shortage of humour either; there’s music, songs and plenty of movement and transformation. The play is performed by two young actors who take on all the male and female roles.
