In almost no other place were the social and cultural upheavals in West Germany during the 1960s and 1970s as clearly evident as in Berlin-Kreuzberg: Through labor recruitment agreements with countries such as Italy, Greece, and Turkey, and the increasing labor migration, changes that shaped reality across West Germany became visible here on a small scale.

The group exhibition “Kreuzberg: Art and Migration since 1960,” scheduled for fall 2026, is dedicated to the diverse and hitherto largely unrecognized cultural output surrounding the theme of labor migration, and shows how artists in Kreuzberg grapple with the tensions and questions of their time.
