In *Between Sunlight*, British artist Kira Freije (born in London in 1985, lives in London, nominated for this year’s Turner Prize) presents a group of sculptural works. Freije’s figures exude a deep sense of connection, while each one simultaneously appears to be lost in its own thoughts or fantasies.

The installation hints at traces of a story and suggests relationships between the characters that are marked by solemnity, love, grief, care, and tranquility. Fabrics and found materials lend the works a material complexity.
By deliberately leaving the connections open, Freije creates space for the audience to draw on their own experiences and individual imaginations.
When creating her life-size figures, Freije first makes aluminum casts of her own hands and feet. Starting from the feet, she then builds the figures upward by welding individual metal strips together—much like drawing a pencil sketch. The faces or facial fragments of the figures are casts of people from Freije’s circle who hold special significance for her. Usually, a figure that takes shape early in the creative process serves as the anchor of the group. The remaining figures gather around it, creating an impression of mutual trust and closeness. In this way, Freije also highlights the deeply human need for community.
