Guided tour of the city with Ticket B
Off into the future! It was under this motto that the second phase of the Karl-Marx-Allee was built in the early 1960s.
There had been a shift away from the grandiose ‘national architectural style’ of the early Stalinallee: it was too expensive, too labour-intensive to implement and increasingly discredited politically. It was replaced by a new vision of architecture and the city – characterised by industrial building methods, modern structures and a new design language. One of the architects who played a key role in shaping this transformation was Josef Kaiser. The Kino International cinema and Café Moskau, built to his designs, became two of the most striking public buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee.
This collaboration is taking place to mark the exhibition ‘Josef Kaiser. Building for the GDR’ at the Berlinische Galerie.
