Diatoms are microscopic algae found in almost all of the Earth’s aquatic habitats. Invisible to the naked eye, they play a crucial role in global ecosystems and produce a significant proportion of the oxygen we breathe.

At the same time, they are highly sensitive indicators of environmental change – tiny witnesses to the health of our waters.
Dr Nelida Abarca opens the door to their fascinating world, combining scientific insights with visual exploration. In a hands-on microscopy session, participants will have the rare opportunity to observe these remarkable organisms at close quarters.
The event also includes a guided tour of the diatom collections at the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Museum in Berlin, including the renowned Friedrich Hustedt Collection.
Built up over more than a century, it forms a unique link between past discoveries and modern research.
By combining microscopy, science and history, this experience invites you to discover a hidden world – and to experience biodiversity from a completely new perspective.
