Free improvisation – playing with the unknown.
Moritz Ebert and Simon Hoffmann are two Berlin-based cellists who find common ground where classical tradition and free improvisation intersect. Their musical backgrounds differ: Moritz’s classical training at the conservatoire took him from Graz to Vienna before he moved to Berlin and turned his attention to jazz, folk music and free improvisation. He is a co-founder of the improvisational trio Softblock and a member of the board of the 1781 Collective, which reimagines the staging of classical music. Simon’s conservatoire career took him via Berlin, Paris and New York and includes seven seasons with the Israel Philharmonic, with whom he toured worldwide. During these tours, he launched electronically-influenced projects such as Frozen Fields, OPTN, Mohobrac and L.o.O.P., which combined the cello with electronic music and club culture. Together, they perform with the Berlin improvisational theatre group ‘Die Gorillas’ in ‘Hello Cello’.
