From Its Beginnings to an International Art Movement

How did a small group of radical painters evolve into one of the most popular art movements of the modern era? Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, and their Impressionist colleagues did more than just change the way people viewed light and color. At the same time, a network of friends, patrons, critics, and collectors formed around their art, which played a decisive role in the international dissemination of their works.

Writers such as Émile Zola and Octave Mirbeau supported the Impressionists with reviews, while new groups of buyers were enthusiastic about this new direction in painting. Among the early collectors were department store owner Ernest Hoschedé and opera singer Jean-Baptiste Faure, who acquired Impressionist works on a large scale. The movement gained additional international attention through the Paris World’s Fairs as well as Paul Durand-Ruel’s galleries in Paris and New York.

The Networks Behind the Success of Impressionism

The exhibition *Impressionism: Artists, Dealers, Collectors* focuses on the network of relationships that helped Impressionism achieve its breakthrough. It takes visitors into private Parisian salons and yacht clubs—the gathering places of the avant-garde—while also highlighting the role of collectors and art dealers in the United States and Germany.

Masterpieces for the Barberini Museum’s Anniversary

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Barberini Museum, ten works from the Hasso Plattner Collection will be displayed alongside 70 Impressionist paintings from major international museum collections. Loans include works from the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, and the Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, among others.
