A piece of dance, drama, and music, based on "Conversation in the Mountains" by Paul Celan, with a poetic response by Thaer Ayoub.
There is a prose text, "Conversation in the Mountains," written in 1959 by a Jewish author who survived the Shoah. In it, a small Jew and a large Jew approach each other, encountering one another in the mountains, engaging in a conversation in which language reaches its limits and the powerlessness in the face of the incomprehensible, the unspeakable, becomes palpable. The mountains—a place of solitude, of isolation, where one can feel small and vulnerable. An image for exile, for various exiles.
And Paul Celan had said that he didn't want his texts to be understood autobiographically. They are more than that.
So they have been engaging with this text since 2023, through the last two years and their events, finding in "Conversation in the Mountains" echoes of current events, new and old traumas and their consequences, which we are all on, "on this road here, which they say is beautiful," separated from one another, or together?
