Sigmund Freud and Martha Bernays – a conversation in 1,000 letters

When Sigmund Freud and Martha Bernays became engaged in 1882, they had no idea that four years of separation lay ahead of them. It was only through rare, precious personal encounters and by writing to one another almost every day that the two were able to find out what the other was up to and what was on their minds.

This reading presents a selection from these more than a thousand letters and takes you back to Vienna in the late 19th century. Full of longing, jealousy and tenderness, the correspondence reflects the highs and lows of a unique relationship.

With wit, charm and intelligent insight, Martha Bernays proves an equal correspondent to Sigmund Freud, who would only later go on to found psychoanalysis. At the start of his career, he was still preoccupied with many other subjects.

Experience an evening full of wit, depth and entertaining insights into an extraordinary relationship!
