In this historical tour, the Sophiensæle are examined from the perspective of the building itself—the former craftsmen’s association hall—and presented in terms of their changing uses and significance.

As an educational and training center for artisans, as a venue for parts of the labor movement, as a site of Nazi forced labor, as workshops for the Maxim Gorki Theater, and finally, from 1996 to the present, as a venue for the independent performing arts in Berlin-Mitte.
