Cinema Surreal

Laurie Anderson, a musician and video artist, made the surrealist documentary *Heart of a Dog* in 2015. In it, she comes to terms with the deaths of her mother, her husband Lou Reed and, not least, her beloved dog Lolabelle.

*Heart of a Dog* is an experimental film that seeks, through Laurie Anderson’s drawings and animations – and every form of media-based memory – to retrace the final days and hours leading up to the passing of a loved one, whilst also exploring the confused yet serene emotional world of Laurie Anderson, a Buddhist.

Expressionist sketches, animated ink drawings, passages of text, home movies and newly shot footage, associative editing techniques, cross-fades and double exposures create a dreamlike, surreal atmosphere, behind which Laurie Anderson, as a gifted narrator, reveals her feelings, her experiences and her encounters with Buddhist teachings. There is a way out of grief, is the message Laurie Anderson seeks to convey.
