Hans receives as a reward for seven years of work a head-sized lump of gold and makes his way home. On the way he meets various people who offer him barter: his gold for a horse, the horse for a cow, the cow for a pig, the pig for a goose and the goose for a grindstone and field stone.

He always thinks he is doing the right thing, because everyone is confirming his good business. When he then drops the heavy stones into a well, Hans makes himself happy and free of all burdens on the way home. The Grimm's fairy tale initially contradicts any logic and can be interpreted differently: "Only the simple-minded find happiness" or "Freedom is more than possession" or "The world wants to be cheated". Director Matthias Schönfeldt sees this openness as strength and creates a kaleidoscope of possible reflections. For this he puts Hans' two 'advisers' as inner voices to the side. Through this trick, he involves the audience in the repetitive arguments about what "good exchange" and what action is "smart". At the beginning of the performance, Hans is in a Rhönrad, which can stand for the course of the world, but also for a wheel of fortune. The animals are symbolized by round, ever-decreasing metal rings, with which Hans deals artistically and playfully. Through animal projections, children are given access to this symbolic, imaginatively inspiring stage world in which the Rhönrad quickly becomes an inn, a well or an accommodation and the 'consultants' quickly slip into other roles such as farmer or goose-girl.

As the pre-performance has impressively shown for school classes, children climb into history very quickly and discuss their own path to happiness
