Performing Arts Season 2026/2027
A space becomes a circle and a spiral; time and the body become a pulse: With GLA55, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, a pioneer of contemporary choreography, once again invites us into the mechanical yet trance-like world of minimal movements.
Six dancers from the Rosas company share the stage with six members of the Ictus and Bl!ndman ensembles. They draw inspiration from Philip Glass’s early works—*Music in Contrary Motion*, *Music in Fifths*, *Music in Similar Motion*, and *Music with Changing Parts*. Together, the artists create a physical ritual that makes both geometry and time tangible: ellipses, circles, and spirals become recurring figures; the choreography condenses movement into a continuum of tension and relaxation, stillness and rotation. Every impulse, every turn generates a resonance in the space that envelops the audience in a physically tangible fabric of time, making obsessive repetition and rhythmic precision palpable.
GLA55 is an experimental evocation that rebalances the relationship between music, space, and the body, condensing minimal material into maximum impact.
Here, body, sound, and rhythmic structure merge into a singular experience in which perception itself is subject to a subtle, hypnotic oscillation.
With GLA55, De Keersmaeker returns to a guiding principle of her work: pushing minimal, abstract material to the limits of its possibilities. In the process, trance-like states, manic shifts, and circular movements come to the fore—choreographic gestures that have shaped the artist’s signature since *Fase* (1982) and the founding of the Rosas company in 1983, and which have also been institutionally carried forward through P.A.R.T.S., the contemporary dance training center founded in 1995.
For over four decades, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has been creating works that intensively explore the relationship between music, space, and movement. Early key works such as *Asch* (1980), *Rosas danst Rosas* (1983), and *The Six Brandenburg Concertos* (2018) demonstrate her consistent use of a minimalist formal language, which now undergoes a new fusion with the music of Philip Glass in *GLA55*.
