Symphony Concert: Yoon & Leonskaja
Like a musical time-lapse, Unsuk Chin’s *Frontispiece for Orchestra* traverses the history of music. Small fragments, motifs, chord progressions, harmonies, and rhythmic structures from works by Bruckner, Strauss, and Brahms are taken up and reassembled. Echoes of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique also appear in this prism of sound—transformed into a world full of a joy of experimentation, atonal colors, and intellectual freedom à la Boulez.
Afterward, the music returns to the great tradition: Mozart’s Ninth Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, performed in their original versions, unfold their full impact, allowing two masterpieces—still beloved today—to speak for themselves.
