Khabat Abas
A two-hour cello performance by Khabat Abas for a single listener. No one can experience *Fragment of Memory* in its entirety. Instead, each person encounters a five-minute fragment of an ongoing performance that began before their arrival and continues after they have left.

Thus, through sound, time, the body, material and improvisation, a piece unfolds into which each person enters at a different moment. Something has already happened; something else is currently taking shape. When the listener leaves, the piece continues without them. What they hear may be shaped by what has happened before and what comes afterwards. What remains is not necessarily the whole, but rather what the listener takes away with them.
*Fragment of Memory* asks: what can remain of an experience that was never complete? Can people ever grasp something in its entirety?
Khabat Abas is currently a Music & Sound Fellow of the DAAD’s Berlin Artists’ Programme.
The composer, improviser and sound artist describes herself as an explorer of ‘the moment and the environment in which I find myself’. The subject she has been exploring her whole life is her instrument, the cello.
