Good morning, Berlin, you can be so ugly, so dirty and grey." Peter Fox. Hardly any other city has experienced as much as Berlin from 1989 to today. After the fall of the Wall, everything was back to square one. 35 years of light and shadow - club culture celebrated around the world, but also banking scandals, gentrification and sell-outs. Capital B tells of this special time and the big question: who shapes a city, those up there or us down here?

In his book, documentary filmmaker, author and journalist Florian Opitz lets greats of the music world such as Peter Fox and Kool Savas, pioneers of club culture from Tresor to Bar 25 such as Dimitri Hegemann and Danielle de Picciotto have their say.

The former mayors Diepgen and Wowereit speak, as does the then squatter Andrej Holm. Even protagonists surrounded by scandals have their say, such as Klaus Landowsky, a banker and CDU parliamentary group leader who was partly responsible for the biggest German banking scandal, or Thilo Sarrazin, who used rigid austerity measures to restructure the city's budget and maneuvered himself into the sidelines with racist and misanthropic statements.

Florian Opitz will speak to some of the protagonists of his book this evening about the highly topical question of who shapes the history of a city - those up there or us down here.

"Capital B" will be published on May 17, 2025.
