Leaving home, saying goodbye and leaving a lot behind: this is the exceptional situation that the artist couple Julia and Lionel Feininger found themselves in in 1937.
Turning their backs on Nazi Germany and moving to the USA is not easy for either of them. They are too closely connected to the idea of the Bauhaus, to the values of the Weimar Republic, to the places that shaped their relationship, such as the Baltic Sea, Paris and Berlin.
As a couple they have achieved a lot together, as evidenced by their (almost) daily, emotional letters, which are a unique testimony to this relationship:
Together they create a new formal language in the spirit of the Bauhaus, work on artistic fame and recognition and overcome narrowness and traditional ideas of family. But their longings are not always fulfilled in the same way and "finding" the other is not always easy.
The play "Findejahre" traces the Feiningers' life stages, tries to understand their special relationship and is at the same time a wonderfully light-hearted excursion into the history of art from Kandinsky to Picasso to Oskar Schlemmer.
