Hoffmann acted extremely skilfully in his search for and dealings with his publishers. He made use of friendships without exploiting them, as with the publisher Kunz in Bamberg, and gladly let his colleague Hitzig at the Kammergericht introduce him to Reimer in Berlin. As a judge at the Kammergericht and a member of the Immediat Investigation Commission during the persecution of the demagogues, Hoffmann stood up for Jahn, the father of gymnastics, who was found innocent, and his release.
