What does ENDZEIT sound like?
Louis Spohr, who was one of the most important living composers in the 19th century, has fallen into oblivion today, just like his great oratorio ‘The Last Things’, which he composed almost 200 years ago.
At the time, Spohr was internationally revered as a brilliant violin virtuoso, conductor and composer and celebrated in the same breath as the greats of the Romantic era - including his fellow composers Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Paganini.
Spohr's oratorio ‘The Last Things’ is a fully composed end time: the New Testament ‘Revelation of John’ forms the basis of this colourful work, a part of the Bible that paints a fascinating and mysterious picture of the end of all things. Spohr packs the biblical visions of the end times and eternity into sounds that are as captivating as they are touching: ‘The Last Things’ are both grand opera and an intimate sound experience - gripping drama and heartfelt sensitivity in one piece. A comforting, optimistic tone dominates the wonderful soundscape of the oratorio. In the middle of the dark season and at the end of the church year, the Berlin Cathedral Choir will bring this lost treasure of romantic music to life together with the symphony orchestra of the Brandenburg State Orchestra under the golden dome of Berlin Cathedral.
END TIME! Louis Spohr ‘The Last Things’ (WoO 61)
