Musikalische Lesung

The echo of gigantic footsteps reverberates across all boundaries. A figure strides through the landscape, casting its shadow ahead. A forest fire is casually stamped out, just like a cigarette. A doubt lingers, like a heat haze – unreal and elusive. It vanishes the moment one approaches. Yet the figure is, in any case, above such doubts. It carries on, without looking back.

The musical reading *Echoflimmern* explores the myth of human superiority over nature. Poetic yet humorous texts combine with electroacoustic music to form a tapestry that drapes itself over the auditorium like a membrane. This finely tuned blend of language and sound continues on a video level. It guides the viewer through landscapes that humans believe they can survey, shape and control. Isolated figures appear within them. They recount unforeseen natural events that radically shake the belief in their own invulnerability.

The text explores the connection between patriarchy and climate catastrophe. It takes as its starting point reflections from political philosophy and phenomenology on the gender-specific experience of one’s own body. Iris Marion Young’s essay ‘Throwing Like a Girl’ serves as an important reference here. Young describes how gender orders shape physical movements, spatial perception and the experience of one’s own capacity for action. *Echoflimmern* transposes these observations into the present context of the climate catastrophe: what happens to the patriarchal self-conception of a human body—whose potential for expansion appears infinite and whose vulnerability is deemed non-existent—when the environment imposes limits on this claim? What does it mean when space is no longer taken for granted, when movements come to a standstill and the supposedly sovereign stride encounters resistance?

For *Echoflimmern*, Till Ernecke continues his collaboration with Jenny Szabo and Anina Woischnig. Ernecke works as a director in theatre, opera and film, combining staged forms with his own texts. In 2017, he was awarded the Young Poets’ Prize, and in 2021 he won the *zeilen.lauf* literary competition. *Echoflimmern* marks his literary debut for the stage. Jenny Szabo works at the intersection of physical theatre, dance and media art. Together with the musician Thelonious Hamel, she works internationally on the interplay of performance, movement and electroacoustic music, including in Austria, Indonesia and Taiwan. For *Echoflimmern*, Szabo contributes her experience with the body and performance, whilst Hamel develops the musical aspect. Ernecke is responsible for the text and acting, whilst Anina Woischnig handles research and dramaturgy.
