by Mark Twain, starring Katja Steuer and Thomas Hollaende

It is certainly not love at first sight, God knows. Adam feels his peace of mind disturbed by his talkative companion; he is baffled by her deep affection for every creature, however useless it may be.

Eve, on the other hand, feels put off by his sober practicality and his lack of empathy, and only realises over time that she loves him despite all his faults. And so the ‘Diary of Adam and Eve’ ends with a magnificent declaration of love.

With his trademark wit, Mark Twain (1835–1910) depicts the beginnings of an adventurous life as a couple, whilst highlighting all manner of clichés and prejudices that must be overcome before the commandment ‘Be fruitful and multiply’ can be fulfilled. The fact that the two eventually find their way to one another is a rare stroke of good fortune for humanity – and for the audience.
