From 1951 onwards, the Berlin-Mitte remand centre was located near Alexanderplatz in the GDR. Men and women were held in the prison on Keibelstraße on various charges: for theft or for political offences such as ‘illegal border crossing’ or ‘incitement against the state’.

The guided tour explores the history of the site and the conditions of detention: what was daily life like for the inmates? How were the prisoners treated, and how were their cells furnished?

  • The tour lasts one hour and is free of charge.

The next public tours are on 27 September 2026 and 11 October 2026, both at 12 noon:

Please register at anmeldung@keibelstrasse.de by 24 September 2026 at the latest, providing the following details: number and names of participants.
