Expert guided tour with Dr. Alexandra Nina Engel, curator of the painting collection, Dr. Ulrike Schmiegelt, provenance researcher, both SPSG and Dr. Gert Bartoschek, former curator of the painting collection.
What does war mean for art? The Second World War cost millions of lives, cities were destroyed and entire landscapes devastated. works of art fell victim to the war everywhere. In the end, even Potsdam's palaces were not spared. The picture gallery at Sanssouci seemed almost lost at the end of the war.
- What did the museum staff do to protect the works of art from the effects of the war?
- Where did they take the collections to safety?
- What did the picture gallery look like in the summer of 1945?
Many works of art were initially transported to the Soviet Union and returned in 1958. But much remained missing even after that. Some works have reappeared in recent decades and were able to return to their place in the picture gallery. Some paintings are still privately owned and many remain missing to this day.
Dr. Alexandra Nina Engel, Dr. Ulrike Schmiegelt and Dr. Gert Bartoschek talk about how they research these questions, what surprising turns the search for the artworks can take and which works are still missing today.
