City tour through Berlin's government district

"Look at this city..." – they take former Berlin Mayor Ernst Reuter at his word and embark on a tour through Berlin's government district. There, they look back at Berlin during the Cold War, focusing in particular on the political rise and impact of Willy Brandt.

As one of Ernst Reuter's successors, Willy Brandt took over the office of Governing Mayor in 1957. After the construction of the Wall, his policy of small steps shaped life in the divided city, which thus became an important testing ground for the New Eastern Policy (Neue Ostpolitik). We will delve deeper into its content and consequences over the rest of the tour. At the same time, we will explore the deeper historical layers of central Berlin and take a differentiated look at national symbols, memorials, and signs of remembrance.
