Art education in 18th-century Berlin

240 years ago, women generally had no access to art education. The Berlin-based graphic artist made it possible for them.

Daniel Chodowiecki’s daughters and their friends learnt drawing and pastel painting from him. This was extraordinary in the male-dominated society of the time.

As deputy director of the Academy of Fine Arts, Chodowiecki supported the budding female artists even beyond the classroom. He introduced them to contacts in the Berlin and Dresden art scenes and enabled them to take part in the Academy’s annual exhibition – an important step on the path to an artistic career.
