Lecture series of the Association for the Promotion of the Egyptian Museum

Among the important acquisitions of the Association for the Promotion of the Egyptian Museum Berlin e.V. is a small steatite mortuary figurine of Crown Prince Thutmose, son of Amenhotep III, which shows him lying on a lion's bier. The prince, already mummified, wears the characteristic hairstyle of the high priests of Ptah of Memphis with braided side curls.

What is remarkable is the reproduction of the Ba of the deceased, which sits on the deceased's chest in the shape of a bird with its wings spread. This detail represents the union of the Ba - one of the five essential constituents of an ancient Egyptian personality - with the body of the deceased and can therefore be seen as a three-dimensional implementation of Book of the Dead saying 89. The lecture will discuss these and comparable statuettes as well as other special forms of death figurines and attempt to place them in the larger context of different grave goods. Speaker: Prof. Dr. Friederike SeyfriedThe lecture takes place directly at the property.
