Cultural and artistic exchange project

"I am because we are." From this collective statement, "CONTEXTOS" emerges as a living bridge between two realities: that of the young dancers from Cartagena (Colombia) and Berlin (Germany).

Through a collaborative creative process, guided by choreographers Alex May and Gabriel Galíndez Cruz, the performers embark on a profound quest: getting to know themselves, exploring, and inhabiting the body as a territory of memory and transformation.

The starting point is a shared question: How do people's environments and personal histories influence the way they inhabit their bodies? From this reflection, a piece emerges in which each dancer contributes their own context, their own history, and their individual understanding of dance.

The work is embedded in the bailes cantados, sung dances, of the Afro-Colombian Caribbean – a vibrant cultural heritage that flows through the bodies, connecting them to their roots and setting the pulse of a narrative that transcends boundaries. This traditional sound world enters into dialogue with contemporary movement, creating an encounter between the present body and the ancestral.

On stage, the bodies explore new ways of being, recognizing imposed structures and letting them go. Dance becomes a space of authentic expressiveness, where every movement communicates and every gesture opens up new possibilities.

In "CONTEXTOS," dance is not just an art form—it is also a path to well-being and self-knowledge. As the performers themselves express it: "Dancing is my peace" and "Speaking heals, but dancing puts your soul back together."

Thus, "CONTEXTOS" is not just a stage piece: it is an act of encounter, listening, and co-creation. A space where differences do not divide, but enrich the shared narrative of who people are when they dance together.

A project that does not seek answers, but opens paths. Where every body is an archive, a mirror, and a future. "I am because we are" – and only together, through dance, can we reinvent ourselves and discover ourselves.

Additional information
Under the direction of Alex May, Memorias Danza-Teatro is a community dance laboratory that emerged from socio-cultural projects in the city of Cartagena and on the island of Tierra Bomba—an insular district and Afro-Colombian settlement.

The young members of the company address issues affecting their territory—such as land dispossession and gentrification—through art, turning dance into a form of resistance and affirmation of rights.

Thanks to these experiences, many children, adolescents, and young adults have embraced dance as a life project. The company designs and develops processes of research, education, and creation across three dimensions: Historical Memory, Body Memory, and Community Memory.

The Schw3rpunkt Berlin Collective was founded in 2023 by young dancers Johanna Paul, Noomi Aldinger, and Jasper Frank, who were members of the children's and youth dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests under the direction of Gabriel Galíndez Cruz until 2024.

After many years of shared dance experience, they chose to work independently as a collective, focusing on contact improvisation to create a community-centered space of closeness.

They premiered their first original piece, Dreieinander, in autumn 2024 at the National Youth Dance Meeting at Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

All three dancers are currently continuing their training at various institutions across Europe.
