MdzM #10

Contemporary Music Month is celebrating its anniversary: From October 2 to 31, 2026, this decentralized festival will take place for the tenth time. For one month, events on numerous Berlin stages will showcase the diversity of the capital’s contemporary music scene.

The MdzM program brings to life the widest variety of trends and forms of expression in contemporary music.

It is aimed at both seasoned concertgoers and curious newcomers. At the same time, the decentralized approach highlights current developments and trends in Berlin’s music scene.

The umbrella festival is organized collaboratively by ensembles, festivals, and artists who contribute their own events. The themes, musical forms, and perspectives that run through the anniversary month are correspondingly diverse.

Music and (Moving) Images

What happens when music not only accompanies, but

transforms images, unsettles them, or makes them open to new interpretations?

Time as a Line, Circle, or Spiral

Time can be conceived as linear movement, as repetition, or as a spiral—and thus offers ample material for musical experimentation.

Solidarity

In a challenging situation for the independent arts scene, solidarity, collaboration, and cultural-political engagement take center stage. The first Berliner Ensemble Festival (Oct. 2–4) demonstrates what can be achieved through collective action.

Small and Large Changes

Music can drive change—or make it audible in the first place.

Origins and the Future

Looking back can open up new perspectives on the present and the future.

Spotlight on Instruments

In 2026, the accordion will be in the spotlight.

An exciting variety of themes and forms of music-making and composition will thus serve as a common thread running through the program.
