The lecture takes as its starting point recent experiences of protests against the regime and against corruption in Serbia. It examines how a collective body articulates itself and mobilises within civil society, and what kind of capacity for action comes into play in collective acts of civil disobedience.

The discussion draws on the specific case of the General Staff Complex – the former headquarters of the Yugoslav Army and the Ministry of Defence – and the joint efforts to preserve it as part of the wider protest movement:

how can a collective comprising various movements activate and challenge historical, political and legal frameworks, and what tools are required to do so?

Two guests will be taking part in the event. Nenad Lajbenšperger is a historian, conservator and researcher specialising in war memorials and patterns of remembrance for war victims. Nikolina Đorđević represents ‘Ansambl Generalštab’, a student-led initiative founded in direct response to the government’s threats to systematically erase the country’s cultural memory.
