Expert guided tour with sculpture curator Dr. Silke Kiesant and conservator Robert Kannis, both SPSG
In March 2025, work began on dismantling the attic sculptures on the theatre wing of the Neues Palais. They now stand, impossible to miss, huddled closely together on the Mopke on the northern side wing or, opposite, in the temporary workshops of the freelance conservators.

These giants, some four metres tall, can now be viewed almost eye to eye. And in doing so, one can appreciate just how artfully and strikingly many of the figures have been crafted, even though one might assume that such details would be impossible to make out at such lofty heights. Some of the colossal figures are only roughly and superficially worked, whilst others rank among the most significant works of the late Frederickian Rococo.
The guided tour invites you to examine the details and analyse the themes drawn from the world of ancient gods, not all of which have yet been fully explored. Can a connection be discerned with Frederick the Great’s monumental guest palace, which was built between 1763 and 1769 following the Seven Years’ War?
Visitors can also look over the shoulders of the restorers currently at work. The current requirements for the restoration of the sandstone sculptures will be explained.
