Juan de Roelas’ altarpiece depicts the Jesuit Fernando de Mata receiving a vision of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Against the backdrop of the cult of the Immaculate Conception, which was then widespread in Seville, the work combines reformist Catholic piety with complex Marian iconography.

Pilgrim’s attributes and a sense of visionary detachment mark Mata as a mediator between earthly devotion and a heavenly apparition.

Speakers: Dr Sven Jakstat, Gemäldegalerie Berlin, and Prof. Dr Dr Felix Körner SJ, Humboldt University of Berlin

The interdisciplinary series of events ‘Christian Art Appreciation’ generally takes place once a month – except during the summer break – and is a collaboration between the St Matthew Foundation and the Gemäldegalerie of the Berlin State Museums. In line with the liturgical calendar, selected works of art are discussed by an art historian and a theologian and opened up for discussion.
